Beginning page numbers on the second page To begin page numbering on the second page: Word 2007 for Windows. On the Insert tab, in the 'Header & Footer' group, click Page Number. Click Top of Page, Bottom of Page, or Page Margins, depending on where you want page numbers to appear in your document.
Choose View, Header and Footer from the menu bar. Click within either the Header or Footer area. Your cursor will be at the left. Press Tab once or twice to move to the center or right, if desired. Type the word “Page,” followed by a space. Choose Insert, Field from the menu bar. Make sure that Categories is set to (All). This works if you want your page numbers to start anywhere after page 1. In my example I want to start numbering on page 3, but this would work even if you wanted page numbering to start on page 57 (for example).
Choose a page numbering design from the gallery of designs. On the Design tab, in the 'Options' group, choose Different First Page. All other versions (Windows or Mac). Put your cursor on the first page, and from the Insert menu, select Page Numbers.
Select the position and alignment you want for the page numbers. Uncheck Show number on first page, and then click Format. Select your desired format. At the bottom of the window, select Start at:, and then select the number just below what you want your first page number to be (e.g., if you want the page after the title page to be page 1, select 0 as the starting page number).
Click OK twice to return to Word. Beginning page numbers anywhere after the first page To begin page numbering anywhere after the first page:.

Determine where you want your page numbering to begin (e.g., page 4), and then place your cursor at the end of the preceding page (e.g., page 3). In Word 2007, from the Page Layout tab, in the 'Page Setup' group, select Breaks. Then, from the drop-down list, select Next Page. In other versions of Word for Windows, from the Insert menu, select Break. Under 'Section break types', select Next Page, and then click OK. In Word 2008 or 2004 for Mac OS X, from the Insert menu, select Break and then Section Break (Next Page).
In Word 2007, from the View tab, in the 'Document Views' group, select Print Layout. In all other versions, place your cursor on the next page, and then from the View menu, select Header and Footer. The Header and Footer toolbar should appear with several icons. If you want the page numbers at the top of the page, make sure you are in the header. If you want the page numbering at the bottom, switch to the footer. Click Switch Between Header and Footer to toggle between the header and footer. Note: In Word 2007, the toggling option is located on the Design tab in the 'Navigation' group.
In other Windows versions, it is the third icon from the left of the Close button. In Mac OS X, it is the fourth button from the Close button. Mousing over the icon for a couple of seconds will display 'Switch Between Header and Footer'. Once you are in the header or footer, find the Same as Previous or Link to Previous icon on the toolbar (or Ribbon in Word 2007). It will have a slightly different look from the other icons because it is already enabled. (Again, you can mouse over the icon to see its name.).
Click Same as Previous or Link to Previous to disable it. This separates the section's headers or footers from those above. In all versions except Word 2007, close the Header and Footer toolbar. In Word 2007, from the Insert tab, in the 'Header & Footer' group, select Page Number, and then choose your preferred position and alignment for the page numbers. In all other versions, from the Insert menu, select Page Numbers., and then choose your preferred position and alignment for the page numbers.
Leave Show number on first page checked. In Word 2007, in the 'Header & Footer' group, click and hold Page Number. In all other versions, click Format., and then in the 'Page numbering' section, click Start at. Select the exact number you want to be your starting number.
Click OK until you return to the document. Using this method, your document should have no page numbering before the point you selected. Later, you can add page numbers to the first portion without harming your custom numbering. To restart or customize your page numbering at a later section of the document, follow the same instructions.
Notes:. The header and footer area is marked by a Header or Footer tag and a line near the top or bottom of your document.

You won’t be able to edit the body of your document while the header or footer area is open. Most headers and footers contain some placeholder text. Type over the placeholder text with your own text. When you're done, on the Header & Footer Tools tab, click Close Header and Footer. Edit a header or footer.
Double-click inside the header or footer area (near the top or bottom of the page) to open the Header & Footer tab. Select the text you want to change and type your new header or footer in its place.
When you're done, on the Header & Footer tab, click Close Header and Footer. Or, double-click anywhere outside of the header or footer area to close the Header & Footer Tools. Change the design of the header or footer You can change the look of a header or footer by applying a different design from the built-in collection.
Note: Changing header or footer styles overwrites your current header or footer, so you’ll have to type the information in again. Double-click inside the header or footer area (near the top or bottom of the page) to open the Header & Footer tab.
Under Header & Footer, click Header or Footer. Choose a style from the gallery. When you're done, double-click anywhere outside of the header or footer area to go back to the body of your document. Delete a header or footer. Double-click inside the header or footer area (near the top or bottom of the page) to open the Header & Footer tab.
Under Header & Footer, click Header or Footer. Click Remove Header or Remove Footer at the bottom of the window. When you're done, double-click anywhere outside of the header or footer area to go back to the body of your document.
Tips:. To prevent headers and footers from appearing on the first page of your document, on the Header and Footer tab, under Options, click Different First Page, and then leave the headers and footers blank.
To create different headers and footers for odd and even pages in your document, on the Header and Footer tab, under Options, click Different Odd & Even Pages. To insert other common header or footer items, such as the document file name or the author name, on the Insert menu, point to AutoText, and then click the item that you want to add. To insert pictures in the document headers and footers, in the header or footer, click where you want to insert the picture.
On the Insert menu, click Picture, and then select the appropriate picture type. To resize the picture, click the picture, and then drag the sizing handles. To add the current date or time to a header or footer, on the View menu, click Header and Footer. Place the cursor in the header or footer, and on the Header and Footer tab, under Insert, click Date or Time. Add different headers or footers for different sections in your document You can add different headers or footers to each section of your document. This is frequently useful when you work with long documents that contain many chapters.
At the end of the chapter or section, click where you want to insert the section break. On the Document Elements tab, under Insert Pages, click Break, and then insert the kind of section break that you want. On the Document Elements tab, under Header and Footer, click Header or Footer, and then insert the kind of header or footer that you want. Click the Header and Footer tab, and then under Options, clear the Link to Previous check box and edit the headers and footers in the new section of your document. Note: When you change a header or footer, Word automatically changes the same header or footer throughout the whole document. To create a different header or footer for part of a document, divide the document into sections. Delete a header or footer.
On the View menu, click Print Layout. In the document, double-click the header or footer that you want to remove. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
Press DELETE. To return to your document, click. Change the space between a header or footer and the top or bottom of the page. On the View menu, click Print Layout. In the document, double-click the header or footer.
Do any of the following: To Do this Change the space between a header and the top of the page Click the Header and Footer tab, and then under Position, change the setting for Header from Top. Change the space between a footer and the bottom of the page Click the Header and Footer tab, and then under Position, change the setting for Footer from Bottom. When you are finished, return to the header or footer and then click. Notes:. When you change a header or footer, Word automatically changes the same header or footer throughout the whole document. To create a different header or footer for part of a document, divide the document into sections. Word determines the spacing based on the default unit of measurement, for example, inches.
To change the unit of measurement, on the Word menu, click Preferences, click General, and then on the Measurement units pop-up menu, choose a unit of measure. Move between headers and footers in your document You can scroll between the header and footer in your document, or you can use the tools on the Header and Footer tab to move between headers and footers in different sections of your document. On the View menu, click Print Layout. In the document, double-click the header or footer. Click the Header and Footer tab, and then under Navigation, select one of the options.
